Cartagena de Indias: 470 years full of history

Cartagena de Indias – The Heroic City
Colombian Tourism destiny for beach, history and culture

Cartagena de Indias, founded in 1533, was one of the three main ports of the Spanish empire in the New World. From this beautiful and historically rich port, sailed the biggest galleons in the Spanish fleet full of treasures from South America, making the city a perfect place for European pirates to plunder. To defend the city against these pirates, different fortifications were built around Cartagena. This left Cartagena de Indias with one of the strongest defenses in South America during that time. The Heroic city, owes its nickname to the brave citizens of Cartagena who fought countless battles from its founding, until it reached independence from Spain in 1811. Its historic center is known as the walled city. The streets, houses, and balconies keep the baroque architecture alive in this city from the Spanish colonial era. For this reason, it was included on UNESCO’s world and cultural heritage list in 1984. Cartagena de Indias enjoys the most privileged location in the Americas with its location overlooking the Caribbean Sea in a quiet and beautiful bay.
