Barranquilla: Happy city at the Caribbean

Barranquilla – The Golden Gate of Colombia
Castillo San Antonio de Salgar

Barranquilla is the capital of the Atlantic state, and was founded in 1629. It is currently the fourth largest and most important city of Colombia. The city has a prominent international influence, which is shown by the numerous immigrants from North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia making for a city with a cosmopolitan character. For this reason, Barranquilla’s architecture combines a mix of neoclassical, modernist, Arabic, and Caribbean styles. The most essential tradition is the Carnival, in which time the city becomes a colorful outdoor celebration. During Carnival, the joy of the Caribbean coalesces with traditional rhythms and cultural expressions of the Colombian people for one magnificent party. UNESCO declared the Carnival of Barranquilla, as a “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”. It is among one of the most unforgettable festivities in Colombia and belongs to one of the five largest carnivals in the world. The culture, cuisine, exuberant people, history, and beautiful natural landscapes make it the must see city of the Caribbean.
