Itinerary Description

This trip is designed for those interested in all that Colombia has to offer, but only have a limited amount time and don’t want to miss the highlights of this extraordinarily diverse country. The journey begins on a plateau of the Andes, and ends in the famed Caribbean Sea. The itinerary shows a truly unique country: Starting from Bogotá we begin by visiting the three majesties of Colombia; our guides show our guests the impressive mountain ranges, the heavenly beaches of the Caribbean, and quaint colonial villages. We visit the famous Gold Museum in Bogota, and see the world’s largest underground cathedral in the salt mines of Zipaquira. Our visitors enjoy the Andalusian atmosphere in the idyllic villages in the province of Boyaca, and swim in the Tayrona National Park at one of the most beautiful beaches on the continent. At the world highest coastal mountain in the world our guests learn about and sample Colombian coffee.  In our last stop we visit the famous “Pearl of the Caribbean”, Cartagena de Indias.

Day 1 – Arrival in Bogotá D. C. (2 nights)

Day 1- Bogotá
We welcome you at the El Dorado airport in Bogotá at an astounding 2600 meters altitude. The bustling capital of Colombia is spectacularly situated on a plateau in the Andes, at the foot of the mountains Guadalupe and Monserrate. The journey to the centrally located Hotel in the historic center takes about 40 minutes, which is followed by a short tour briefing.

Day 2 – Bogota – City Tour, Monserrate, Gold Museum, Candelaria

Day 2 - museo del oro
We begin by first showing our guests an overview of the city from the top of the Monserrate mountain (3150m) to enjoy the spectacular views over Colombia’s huge capital city. We explore the historical and colonial  neighborhood of La Candelaria, Bogota’s well-preserved old town, and visit the world famous Gold Museum (which holds one of the largest pre-Columbian collection of artifacts), the Bolivar Plaza and some stunning churches such as; San Francisco, San Agustín, and Tercera Orden.

Day 3 – Bogota – Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira – Farmers market – Villa de Leyva (2 nights)

The drive to Villa de Leyva leads us to the largest underground cathedral in the world which is located in the nearby salt mines of Zipaquirá. We visit the beautiful Plaza de los comuneros, where the first freedom movement in Colombia commenced. In Chiquinquira we visit a typical Colombian farmer’s market. From there we adventure to one of the most beautiful villages in Colombia. Villa de Leyva is a quaint piece of heaven; with its white houses, tiled roofs, and the centuries-old cobblestone in its Plaza Mayor (which during the colonial period was served as a getaway for the Spanish colonialists).

Day 4 – Villa de Leyva Walking Tour. Optional: Hiketour to Paso del Angel

In the morning we take a walking tour with one of our experienced tour guides who tells our guests about the history and tradition that goes along with the beautiful city of Villa de Leyva. In the afternoon we give our tourists the option to continue exploring and enjoying the flavor of this pearl of the colonial period on their own. Optional: Afternoon Hiketour to the waterfall El Hayal and Paso del Angel through the mountains and surrounding hills. We also visit the Dominican monastery EcceHomo, founded in 1620.

Tag 5 – Villa de Leyva over Boyacá to Bogota & flight to Santa Marta (3 nights)

On our way to Bogotá we stop at the “Puente Boyacá”, the site where occurred the battle for Independence in 1819. By plane our tour  continues to the city of Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast. This coast can proudly call itself one of the most diverse coastal strips in the world. It ranges from a tropical rainforest in the south west, to the Guajira desert in the north-east. In between these two extremes is the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (the highest coastal mountain in the world). After a panoramic tour of Santa Marta, we refer our guests to a comfy hotel in the Old Town.

Day 6 – Santa Marta – Day trip to Tayrona National Park & Cabo San Juan

Our next destination is the Tayrona National Park, one of the most diverse as well as beautiful places in the country. This is where the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the Caribbean meet. Huge stones lie scattered on white  sandy beaches, all in front of densely-covered mountains. We depart from Santa Marta in the early morning and walk through tropical forests in the foothills of the Sierra to one of the most beautiful bays of Colombia, Cabo San Juan del Guía. In the late afternoon we leave Tayrona Park and drive our guests back to the hotel.

Tag 7 – Santa Marta – Day trip to Sierra Nevada: Minca & coffefarm La Victoria

Our group takes an SUV up into the Sierra Nevada reaching Minca, a charming mountain village caught in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. A lush and exotic vegetation palette, fresh coffee, tropical birds, along with the many waterfalls and in the area make Minca a popular destination for nature lovers. After a short visit to the village, our group continues down to the waterfall Pozo Azul, where we take time and give our guests the option to swim in the crystal clear water. After, we venture up to a traditional coffee farm and “living museum” La Victoria. There our guests learn everything about the production and taste of the “red bean” coffee of Colombia.

Day 8 – Drive to Cartagena (3 nights), City Tour incl. Convent La Popa & Fort San Felipe

After breakfast, we drive along the coast passing the city of Barranquilla, to Cartagena de Indias, named the Pearl of the Caribbean. In the afternoon, our tour visits the Fort San Felipe de Barajas, the largest fort ever built by the Spanish conquistadors in America. Then we enjoy the amazing view from the monastery of La Popa Cartagena which has a wall is 150m high and was built in 1607 by the Augustinians monks. At the end of the day we discover by foot; the colonial streets, plazas and churches of the old town Cartagena.

Hotel 3 Banderas***+>>200 year old colonial house that has been faithfully restored. Located in the historic center of Cartagena de Indias, guests can relax here in the two courtyards, as well as on a beautiful terrace on the third floor.

Day 9 – Cartagena – Day at leisure. Optional: Rosario Islands

Free day in Cartagena.

Optional: With a Speedboat, as part of an international group, our guests can go to the archipelago and Underwater National Park Islas del Rosario. We make a stop on the Isla del Sol, and enjoy the day on the beautiful Caribbean beaches. Return around 16:00 clock.

Day 10 – Return to Europe from Bogota

Around noon, we take you to the airport. The flight from Cartagena to Bogota takes around 1,5 hours. Bogota flight to your origin country.

Tag 11 – Arrival in your country

As soon as you arrive in your country, you know you made it. In Colombia the only risk is that you want to stay.

The price quoted above is an approximate price per person on a double room basis and will differ based on your actual date and month of visit (see departure dates).

* Flight Bogota – Cartagena not included. This flight should be booked together with the international flight, that means: Your Country – Bogota & Cartagena – Bogota – Your country. So you dont need at your return to check in a second time in Bogota. Thus,  If the flight Bogota – Cartagena should be delayed and you miss the connecting international flight, the airline count it as single and not as two separate tickets.
